When is the right time to hire a UX Designer?
UX Design

HIRING
Startups
Most founders hire a UX designer too late. Not because they don't value design, but because they assume design is something you add once the product exists.
By then, the damage is already done.

The most expensive design mistake is building the wrong thing
Development time is expensive. If you build a flow that doesn't work for users and then need to rebuild it, you've paid for it twice. Once to build it wrong, once to fix it.
A UX designer involved before development catches those problems on paper. A flow that takes a day to restructure in a design file takes weeks to rebuild in code.
Signs you need one now, not later
You don't need to wait for a crisis. Here are the clearest signals:
Users are dropping off at a specific point and you can't explain why. You're adding features but engagement isn't improving. Your team keeps disagreeing on what to build next and the conversations go in circles. You're preparing for a funding round and the product needs to reflect the maturity of the business. You're about to start development on something significant.
Any one of those is enough.
What about very early stage?
Even before you have a product, a UX designer can help you validate the core flow before a single line of code is written. This is not about making things pretty. It's about making sure the thing you're building makes sense to the person who has to use it.
The earlier you involve design thinking, the less you pay to fix things later.
The takeaway
There's no perfect moment. But there are clear signals. If any of the above sound familiar, you're probably already past the right time.
Not sure if your situation calls for a full redesign or something smaller? Let's figure it out.
